European Hackberry, also known as Celtis australis or nettle tree, is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 80 ft in height. It is native to southern Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor. Its small, dark-purple berries are loved by birds and wildlife. The flexible thin shoots are used as walking sticks. It is an excellent fuel and the bark produces a yellow dye. This long-living tree is resistant to air pollution and is often planted as an ornamental tree. With a rich history dating back to ancient times, Celtis australis was even considered the Lotus of the ancients described as sweet and wholesome by famous scholars.
