Looking for a tough and fast-growing tree for your garden? Look no further than Celtis occidentalis, also known as the Common hackberry or nettletree. This large deciduous tree is native to North America and can rise up to 130 feet in the best conditions. It can tolerate drought, wind, and floods, making it a great choice for the Midwestern USA. The tree's grayish bark is covered with corky warts and ridges, and it has a yellow fall color. It grows quickly and is pyramidal in youth, becoming an elm-like habit as it matures. Not only is the Common hackberry easily transplanted and not particular about soil, but it is also edible - the fruit and seed can be ground up finely together and used as a flavoring.
