Discover the majestic beauty of Hesperocyparis (Cupressus) duclouxiana, also known as Yunnan cypress. This evergreen conifer is a species endemic to China, found exclusively within the mountain forests of Yunnan and Sichuan. This unique tree thrives in deep river gorges, growing harmoniously among Sikang pines, diverse oaks, chinquapins, and chestnuts. Yunnan cypress shows striking characteristics with its fibrous reddish-brown bark, a conical crown in its youth which transforms to a rounded or broadly domed form with age. The slender, horizontal branches are densely arranged with spread gold branchlets which are not pendulous. Single or grouped cones adorn the ends of the branches, contributing to its charming appearance. Despite facing threats due to logging and habitat loss, Yunnan cypress stands strong, reaching heights of 52 ft and spreads of 45 ft. The natural stands remain scattered and secluded within deep river gorges and thrive in the rocky, gravelly or sandy soils of the seasonally moist coniferous forest, reflecting its adaptability. It was the French missionary Père François Ducloux who discovered the tree during his plant collecting voyages in Yunnan province during 1904 - 1905, and in his honor, the tree was named after him. Today, Yunnan cypress is revered not just in the wild among the mountain valleys, but also as a common feature around temples and villages. Experience the enchanting allure of the Yunnan cypress, a testament to nature's resilience and beauty.
