Symphoricarpos oreophilus, commonly known as Mountain Snowberry, is a flowering plant of the honeysuckle family, native to western North America, from British Columbia to northern Mexico. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow to a height of 1.5 metres, depending upon environmental conditions. The plant reproduces both vegetatively and sexually and is common in many types of habitat in western North America, including pinyon-juniper woodlands. Mountain Snowberry is important as a food source for many animals, including deer, elk, and yellow-billed magpies. Despite its preference for open habitats, it can grow in heavily forested regions as well. The plant's relative low growth form provides moderate to low cover for ungulates and important hiding cover for small mammals and birds. Mountain Snowberry is also an indicator species for certain habitat types and can dominate some ecosystems, such as sagebrush. It is a highly variable responder to fire, with its response depending on the severity and season of the burn. Get your mountain snowberry today to add some natural beauty to your environment!
