Introducing Pinus taeda, commonly known as loblolly pine, the southern yellow pine that is found across the Southeastern United States. This fast-growing conical tree features bright green needles measuring 6-10 inches and is often used for Christmas decorations. It is considered the most commercially important tree in Southeastern US as it is important for both timber and pulp production. Loblolly pine is also known for having the largest genome size among living organisms, with 22 billion base pairs. The tallest and largest loblolly pines are found in Congaree National park, with the tallest tree reaching 169 feet and the largest having a volume of 42 cubic meters. Loblolly pine is also famous for being the tree that U.S President Dwight D. Eisenhower wanted to cut down as he hit the tree so many times while golfing it became an issue. Lastly, the loblolly pine genome's size makes it more vulnerable to inbreeding depression, which affects its genetic diversity.
