Allium senescens, also known as Curley Chives, German Garlic or Ornamental Onion, is a unique and beautiful addition to any garden. This bulbous herbaceous perennial produces up to 30 pink flowers in characteristic allium umbels in the mid to late summer and grows between 8" and 40" in height. Its thin, strap-like, bluish-gray foliage forms dense, spreading clumps, and its lilac/lavender flowers are mildly fragrant. Although its leaves are edible, this plant is primarily considered to be an ornamental and is not commonly used for culinary purposes. Members of the Allium genus are known to be healthy additions to any diet, containing sulphur compounds which help reduce blood cholesterol levels and tonify both the digestive and circulatory systems. This unique plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit and is sure to be a standout addition to any garden.
