Abies nordmanniana, also known as Caucasian Fir or Nordmann Fir, is a large evergreen coniferous tree native to the mountains south and east of the Black Sea. It grows up to 60 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 2 meters. With dark green needles, it is a popular symbol of the winter holidays, favored for its attractive foliage and a long shelf-life. Its leaves are not sharp and do not drop readily, even when the tree dries out. The wood of Abies nordmanniana is light and soft, and is used for general construction, paper, and more. It is also a favored ornamental tree for parks and large gardens. The species is named after Alexander von Nordmann, a professor of botany at Odessa.
