Picea glauca densata, Black Hills Spruce, is a hardy and slow-growing evergreen tree that boasts a compact and symmetrical habit. Native to the Black Hills of South Dakota, this species of spruce is widely planted in the U.S. and adapts well to a variety of conditions. Its shiny green or blue-green needles and green cones make it a popular choice for hedges, windbreaks, and specimen trees. It thrives in full sun and prefers moist loamy soil with a pH of 4.0 to 7.5. This tree is fairly drought resistant but needs additional moisture during droughts. It grows up to 60 feet in height and is perfect for farmstead and field windbreaks, wildlife habitats, and agroforestry products. With its aromatic crushed leaves and ability to withstand harsh weather, Picea glauca densata is an excellent addition to any landscape.
