Picea pungens var. glauca, the Blue Spruce, is a stunning ornamental tree that boasts intense blue color. The Kaibab source is our second best for blue color, producing a high percentage of seedlings with beautiful blue needles. This species is native to western North America and is commonly found growing along streamsides in mountain valleys. Blue Spruce is a medium-sized evergreen tree with a conical crown, stout orange-brown shoots, and viciously sharp needles. The pendulous cones are slender cylindrical with thin, flexible scales. Its deeply penetrating root system firmly anchors the tree against winds. Blue Spruce is also grown for the cut Christmas tree industry due to its faster growth rate and softer needles than average Blue Spruce. It prefers a cold dry high mountain site and abundant moisture at the roots. This long-lived tree can withstand pH levels between 4-6 and is intolerant of atmospheric pollution.
