Pinus nigra, also known as Austrian pine or European black pine, is a versatile species of coniferous evergreen tree. It can reach heights of 60-100 ft and is moderately fast-growing, making it an ideal tree for street planting and as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks. It is resistant to snow, ice, and salt spray and has intermediate drought tolerance. The timber is used for rough carpentry and furniture, and the tree has a lifespan of over 500 years. Pinus nigra is found across southern Mediterranean Europe, from Spain to the eastern Mediterranean, and is also planted successfully as far north as Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. However, it is important to note that Austrian pine is currently facing a serious problem with red band needle blight disease caused by a fungus and is not recommended for landscaping, especially in groups or rows. Overall, Pinus nigra is a valuable and adaptable tree, highly suitable for landscaping and forestry purposes.
