Pinabete, Pino Ocote, Schwerdtfeger's Pine, Tecun Uman Pine, or Pinus tecunumanii is a popular timber tree native to Mexico and Central America. This tree species has been cultivated for the paper industry in many subtropical parts of the world, including Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and South Africa. High elevation sources of this tree are the most productive, and it grows up to 2900 meters above sea level.
Pinus tecunumanii has a yellowish hue and low extractive content in most environments, making it ideal for pulp, paper, and solid wood products. Studies have shown that the wood density of P. tecunumanii is generally greater than P. patula, less than P. oocarpa, and greater than P. caribaea var. hondurensis when planted at mid-elevations.
Historically, P. tecunumanii is important as it is named after Tecún Umán, a Mayan chief who defended his homeland against Spanish conquistadors in the 16th Century. With its excellent wood quality, Pinus tecunumanii is a great investment for those in the paper and timber industry.
