This shrub is native to the western half of Canada and the United States, with a range extending south into northern Mexico. From deserts to mountain peaks up to 7,000 feet in elevation, this versatile plant is a popular feature of many North American landscapes. Skunk bush was employed by several native North American tribes for its astringent qualities and has been used to treat a variety of ailments. The fruit is analgesic, astringent, and stomachic, and has been used to treat stomach problems, grippe, and toothaches. The leaves and bark also have various medicinal properties, from treating itches and colds to inducing impotency as a method of contraception. With its dark green leaves that may turn red and yellow in the fall, Rhus trilobata is a striking addition to any garden or landscape. While this plant should be used with caution due to its potentially toxic nature, it can be a valuable natural remedy when used under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.
