Discover the versatile world of Fraxinus excelsior, commonly known as Common Ash or European Ash. Known for its tall, domed crown, it is a fast-growing deciduous tree that may rise to a height of 100 ft, cultivating valuable timber. Surprisingly tolerant of cutting, this tree was once extensively coppiced for its wood. The Fraxinus excelsior leaves are unique with their dark green color and black buds, which effectively helps to distinguish them from other types of ash.
Native to mainland Europe and found as far east as the Caucasus and Alborz mountains, this tree has naturalized in several parts along the United States and Canada. Its seeds, popularly known as "keys" or "helicopter seeds", are fruits called a samara.
Interesting fact: this tree exhibits an intricate gender system where a male tree one year can produce female flowers the next, and vice versa. This hardy species thrives in a wide range of soil types, especially on calcareous substrates, making it a valuable component of our global ecosystem.
Apart from its ecological significance, the European Ash is also famed for its diverse usability. From serving as the material for bows, tool handles, tennis rackets, and snooker cues, to furniture, flooring, and architectural features, the Ash Wood's hardiness and attractive grain make it a popular choice across industries.
