Sorbus torminalis, also known as the Chequer Tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to Europe, North Africa, and Southwest Asia. With its smooth, greyish bark and maple-like leaves, this tree produces white, fragrant flowers in May, followed by edible brown fruits which were once used in medicine. It prefers deep, fertile soils but can adapt to a range of conditions. This valuable hardwood was traditionally used to make billiard cue sticks and winepress screws, and is now prized for decorative veneers. The fruits are enjoyed by birds and mammals and can be harvested for their date-like flavour. This tree is rarely found in the wild and is an indication of primary woodland when it is. Its Latin name, Torminalis, means "good for colic", a reference to its medicinal properties. Order your Sorbus torminalis today and enjoy its ornamental appeal and ecological value.
