Crataegus succulenta, also known as Fleshy Hawthorn or Succulent Hawthorn, is a species of hawthorn widely spread across southern Canada and the United States. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to six meters tall and is hardy to zone four. The plant's flowers bloom from May to June and are hermaphrodite, pollinated by Midges. The fruit that this plant produces is highly valued for making jellies, and it can also be dried for later use. The fruit itself is small with sweet, juicy, and pulpy flesh. Crataegus succulenta is adaptable to different types of soils as it can grow in sandy, loamy, and heavy clay soils, but requires well-drained soil. It prefers acidic to alkaline soil types, semi-shaded areas, and can tolerate both dry and moist conditions. The plant is also wind-resistant but not tolerant of maritime exposure and atmospheric pollution. This plant is the most wide-ranging hawthorn in North America, and although it has many variant forms, they are considered synonyms.
