Enjoy the beauty and elegance of the Taiwania, a large coniferous tree native to eastern Asia, growing in the mountains of central Taiwan and other parts of Southwest China, Myanmar, and northern Vietnam. Also known as the Chinese Coffin Tree, this species from the cypress family Cupressaceae, stands out as one of the largest tree species in Asia, towering up to 200 ft tall with a trunk up to 13 ft in diameter above its buttressed base.
The Taiwania is an evergreen conifer adorned with needle-like leaves that gradually become more scale-like as the tree matures. Cones are small, with 15-30 thin, fragile scales each housing two seeds. This tree thrives best in moist, rich, acidic, well-drained soils, in full sun but tolerates light shade, and must be sited in a location protected from winter winds, perfect for giving your landscape a unique touch of nature.
Sadly, Taiwania is endangered due to illegal logging for its valuable wood, and it's quite rare and difficult to find in commerce. However, where winter hardy, it is grown as an ornamental tree and provides an attractive and impressively tall backdrop for your outdoor space. Savor the Taiwania’s rich contribution to the natural world, as it majestically out-tops all other associated trees.
