Swietenia mahagoni, also known as Acajou De Cuba or West Indian Mahogany, is a highly sought-after species of mahogany wood. Native to southern Florida and islands in the Caribbean including Cuba, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, this species is the original source of mahogany wood. However, it is listed as “Threatened” in the Preservation of Native Flora of Florida Act. Despite this, Swietenia mahagoni continues to be a popular choice for shipbuilders, furniture makers, and instrument manufacturers. Its superior tonewood qualities make it a favorite among guitar and mandolin makers, while its use in luxury liner interior trim, paneling and furniture emphasizes its durability and strength. As the national tree of the Dominican Republic, Swietenia mahagoni is a valuable and threatened species that needs protection and conservation efforts.
