Looking for a delicate and fragrant addition to your garden? Look no further than the Styrax americanus, commonly known as American Snowbell or Mock Orange. Native to the southeastern United States, this slender-branched deciduous shrub or small tree stands at 8-15 ft tall with a wide, wispy open crown. Its showy, white, bell-shaped flowers are borne in pairs from leaf axils, covering the plant in a fragrant white cloud. The foliage is bright-green and glossy, and in fall, grayish fruit appear. American Snowbell prefers moist, acid soil, making it a good garden shrub in the right conditions. Check out plants.usda.gov for more information on this stunning native species.
