Sorbus aria, also known as Chess-apple and Whitebeam, is a deciduous tree with a compact and domed shape, with few upswept branches, and is native to Europe and the Near-East. The hermaphrodite cream-white flowers appear in May and are insect pollinated, leading to scarlet berries that are often eaten by birds. The leaves are shiny dark green on top and almost white on the underside, transforming the tree's appearance in strong winds. This versatile tree is very tolerant of exposed maritime conditions, making it a great windbreak near the coast. Its hard wood is used for furniture, tool handles, and more.
