Introducing Sophora tetraptera, also known as the large-leaved kōwhai, one of the four native legume genera found in New Zealand. This evergreen or semi-deciduous tree produces beautiful 2" golden yellow pealike flowers in pendulous clusters to 8" in May, with pods measuring up to 7" and four wings. Its larger, more widely spaced leaves set it apart from the other seven species of kōwhai. The wood of the Sophora tetraptera is sought-after for its compact, dense, heavy, and extremely durable qualities. It's used for cabinet work, bearings, turnery, ornamental uses, and more. This slow-growing tree is hardy to zone 8 and is best grown in the warmer areas of the country where its wood can withstand winter cold. Sophora tetraptera grows naturally only in the central east of the North Island in New Zealand and has a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria. Order your very own Sophora tetraptera and add this lovely and unique tree to your collection today.
