Explore the world of Senna alexandrina, often known as Alexandrian Senna, an ornamental plant revered for its herbal properties. Found natively in upper Egypt and Sudan, this shrublike plant has marked its prominence in various other regions, including India and Somalia. With a height ranging between 20" to 40", Alexandrian Senna exhibits an erect stem that diversifies into spreading branches carrying complex, feathery pairs of leaves. Notably, each pair has a sharp top and the leaflets are equally divided at the base. The flowers are large, raceme blossoms with a yellow hue leaning toward brown, while its legume fruit hosts about six seeds.

Apart from being visually appealing, Alexandrian Senna holds a significant place in traditional medicine and is cultivated for its multitude of uses. Dried and packed in palm-leaf bags, it is used as a potent laxative by adults in forms of tea or pods. Modern medicine supports its effectiveness, employing senna extracts as a laxative since the 1950s. Moreover, it exhibits fungicidal properties, rendering it a valuable tool in the fight against fungi. However, the plant is not suitable for infants to prevent potential side effects like severe diaper rash. The active ingredients are senna glycosides which work wonders by interacting with immune cells in the colon. Discover the marvel of nature that is Senna alexandrina.
