Explore the fascinating world of Schizolobium parahyba, often known as the Brazilian Firetree. This deciduous tree can reach heights of up to 115 ft in its native Atlantic rainforests. Its fern-like and non-branching structure, coupled with golden yellow flowers, make it a popular architectural and decorative tree choice. Noted for having some of the largest compound leaves in the plant kingdom, it sheds these leaves prior to flowering and produces racemes filled with a single flattened seed encased in explosive pods that turn black and crack open upon maturity. Schizolobium parahyba has the ability to thrive in a variety of conditions including well-drained soils and also drought, once established. Ideal in pioneer species, this tree is fast-growing and known for its low requirement of fertilizer. Schizolobium parahyba wood is prone to insect damage but serves multiple purposes in light constructions, packaging and even furniture. Despite having no medicinal or edible benefits, the leaf extracts are traditionally used as an antidote to venomous snake bites and seeds often made into buttons and beads. A truly remarkable tree with exceptional growth and ecological benefits, perfect for environmental and landscape enhancements.
