Schizachyrium scoparium, also known as Little Bluestem or Beard Grass, is a beautiful North American prairie grass. This warm-season perennial bunchgrass is prominent in tallgrass prairie, along with other native grasses like big bluestem, indiangrass, and switchgrass. Little Bluestem is easy to grow and stunning to behold, with clustered erect green or purplish stems that turn an attractive pale browny-red in the fall. It needs full sun and produces silvery 2 1/2" seed heads in late summer. Native from Quebec to Alberta, south to Florida and Texas, this resilient grass is perfect for any garden.
