Introducing Rhapis excelsa, also known as Broadleaf Lady Palm, Little Lady Palm and Windmill Palm. This beautiful species of fan palm is native to southern China and Taiwan, but is grown in cultivated groups in China and has spread in popularity worldwide. Classified as a low light and humidity plant, this species is perfect for indoor or outdoor spaces as it can grow up to 12 ft in height and 1 inch in multi-stemmed clumps with glossy, evergreen leaves divided into broad, ribbed segments. Leaf-ends are saw-toothed, occurring on slender petioles ranging from 20 to 60 cm in length. This usually dioecious species produces a small inflorescence at the top of the plant with spirally-arranged, fleshy yellow flowers containing three petals fused at the base. Ripe fruit are fleshy and white, though R. excelsa more readily propagates via underground rhizome offshoots. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit and makes for a stunning addition to any space.
