Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours

Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days , or until radicle emergence

Germination: sow 1-2" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed

Other: fall sowing in mulched beds is prefered to artificial stratification

Looking for a fast growing Oak tree with beautiful fall colors? Look no further than Quercus texana, also known as Nuttall's Oak. Native to North America, this tree is typically found in the lower Mississippi river valley and can grow in wet soils. Its pointed leaves resemble those of the Georgia Oak and Pin Oak, but it is known for its reliably red fall colors, outperforming the popular Pin Oak in this regard. While still relatively unknown in the horticultural industry, it is gaining popularity for its growth rate, ease of transplanting, and stunning fall colors. Don't confuse it with the Texas Red Oak, which was previously also known as Quercus texana but is now called Quercus buckleyi.
