Prunus subhirtella, also known as Higan cherry, Spring Cherry, Rosebud cherry, or Winter Flowering Cherry, is a beautiful small tree originating from Japan. It features white to pink flowers that may bloom intermittently from autumn until spring and small black fruit. The tree prefers moist and well-drained soil but can tolerate summer heat and winter cold. It grows up to 40-50 feet tall, with ovate to lanceolate green leaves, making it an attractive landscape tree. Higan cherry is a naturally occurring hybrid and is resistant to most diseases. Its flowers are often used as indoor decorations, and the leaves have some garden value for their autumn color. The cultivar P. × subhirtella 'Autumnalis Rosea' has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This tree is perfect for adding a burst of color to your garden and providing shelter for birds.
