Prunus serrula, or Tibetan cherry, is a deciduous tree native to China, prized for its stunning coppery-red bark that peels off in thin strips, revealing a shiny polished trunk. Its leaves are simple, with serrated margins and turn yellow, red or crimson in autumn. The flowers, produced in clusters of one to three, are white to pink. This ornamental tree prefers full sun and is tolerant to a variety of soil types. It does well in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 8 and is susceptible to low risk of common garden diseases and pests. Its potential as an invasive species is low too. Prunus serrula also makes a great showy tree grafted onto Prunus serrulata (Japanese cherry) crowns, boasting red bark and vividly coloured flowers. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Add this beautiful tree to your garden and enjoy its year-round appeal.
