Known for its tall, straight growth and distinctive bark that is thick and grey-brown at the base but turns thin, flaky and bright orange-red in the upper crown, the red pine is a sight to behold in any landscape. It's also self-pruning, maintaining a clean, aesthetically pleasing appearance as it ages. The red pine produces timber and paper pulp of significant commercial value. Its resin also contains turpentine, a substance with antiseptic, diuretic, rubefacient and vermifuge properties, often used in treating kidney and bladder complaints and rheumatic afflictions. Moreover, it's the state tree of Minnesota. Favoring well-drained soil and windy sites, this species thrives best under direct sunlight.
