Introducing Pinus nigra ssp. salzmannii, also known as the Pyrenean Pine, Cevennes Pine, and Spanish Black Pineā€”an exceptional beauty with its towering stature, reaching up to 90ft in height. Dressed in light brown bark with deep fissures and ornate scaly plates, this evergreen tree stands as a unique marvel in the flora world. Its leaves possess an incredible quality of flexibility, expanding up to 8-16 cm long and 1-1.3 mm wide. Hailing from diverse locations like Algeria, France, Morocco, Andorra (presumed) and primarily Spain, it flourishes at elevations between 400-1500 m. Thriving both naturally and in forest plantations across Spain, it forms smaller, isolated communities in North Africa. Despite its isolated populations, P. salzmannii is marked as 'Least Concern' for conservation due to its broad gene pool. It embodies resilience, readily adapting to low mountains or hills, and prospering in well-drained sandy or rocky soils. This medium-sized evergreen tree can reach 50' tall in cultivation, showcasing a narrower habit than the species with ascending branches. Displaying striking dark green, less stout needles, 4-7" long, all year round, and young branches distinctly reddish-orange, it stands salt and strong wind tolerant, displaying its unwavering valor.
