Pieris japonica, also known as Japanese andromeda, Japanese pieris or Dwarf Lilly-of-the-Valley Shrub, is a beautiful plant native to eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan where it grows in mountain thickets. With shiny dark green evergreen leaves that emerge bronzy in spring, this shrub is a sight to behold. In early spring, it produces stunning white flowers that hang in pendulous masses, emitting a slightly fragrant scent. It has a neat, upright habit and prefers moist, well-drained, acid soil, but does not insist on it. However, it needs shade in the US South. While it is the parent of many cultivars, it is also a poisonous plant if consumed by people or animals. Pieris japonica is a versatile plant that can be grown in a Woodland Garden, Dappled Shade, or Shady Edge, but not Deep Shade, and is a wonderful addition to any garden.
