Picea pungens var. glauca, also known as Blue Spruce, is a native evergreen tree species from western North America that offers high aesthetic appeal with its intensely blue-colored needles. Blue Spruce is not only a popular ornamental tree owing its striking color and conical form, but it is also extensively used in the cut Christmas tree industry. In addition to its visual attraction, this tree has a deeply penetrating root system that anchors it securely against winds and is tolerant to a wide range of growing conditions from wet and cold, to dry high mountain sites. It grows to a medium size with a dense, conical crown and its foliage remains lush and blue all year-round. Blue Spruce has low propagation requirements and can efficiently grow in coarse-textured soils with medium moisture and pH between 5.5 to 7.8. It is also available for commercial use and in addition to being an attractive, ornamental tree, serves as raw material for pulpwood and veneer products.
