Discover the beauty and versatility of the Paliurus spina-christi, commonly known as Jerusalem Thorn, Garland Thorn, Christ's Thorn, or Crown of Thorns. This stunning species is native to the Mediterranean region and southwest and central Asia, stretching all the way from Morocco and Spain to Iran and Tajikistan.

As a deciduous shrub or small tree, the Paliurus spina-christi can reach a height of 3-4 m. Its unique zig-zagged shoots feature a leaf and two stipular spines on the outside of each kink. The oval-shaped leaves are glossy green with a smooth edge, measuring around 2-5 cm in length and 1-4 cm in width.

The most outstanding feature of this plant is its fruit. From August to October, you can witness its conspicuous brown-yellow winged nutlet, which is centered in a circular wing measuring 2-3.5 cm in diameter. Legend has it that the spiny branches of this plant were used to make the crown of thorns worn by Christ before his crucifixion.

Apart from its intriguing history and appearance, the Paliurus spina-christi offers edible fruit. Enjoy the raw fruit or dry it for later use. With a pleasant sub-acid taste reminiscent of dried apples, these woody fruits can reach a diameter of up to 30 mm.

This plant thrives in dry soil and full sun, making it suitable for gardens in southern Europe and western Asia. Due to its ornamental curiosity, the Paliurus spina-christi is cultivated in various areas, including Fiji.

Experience the allure and versatility of the Paliurus spina-christi. Its unique features, fascinating legend, and edible fruit make it a captivating addition to your garden.
