This annual or biennial herb grows to be about 15-60cm tall and prefers sunny, well-drained soil. While it isn't very cold-tolerant, it can be overwintered outdoors in areas where temperatures don't drop below 23°F. This interesting plant is even cultivated as a vegetable in China. Its blooms come in deep purple, lavender, or white and its narrow, linear fruit can grow to be up to 11cm long.
