Nigella damascena, also known as Love-in-a-mist, Devil in the Bush, or Ragged Lady, is a beautiful garden flowering plant belonging to the buttercup family. It grows to be 12-18 inches tall with an abundance of blue, pink, lavender, white, or purple sepals surrounding the flower. The foliage is equally attractive, creating a lush garden cover when the plant is not in bloom. The plant is native to southern Europe, north Africa, and southwest Asia but has become popular in gardens throughout the temperate world. The plant's essential oil is used in perfumery and lipstick. Its name comes from the flower being nestled in a ring of multifid, lacy bracts.
