Malus pumila 'Borowinka', also known as Borowinka Apple, Dutchess Apple, or Dutchess of Oldenburg Apple, is a versatile and hardy cultivar perfect for both culinary and dessert uses. Originally hailing from the Tula region of Russia in the late 1700s, this apple was named in honor of Catherine Pavlovna, the Grand Duchess of Oldenburg. It quickly gained popularity across Europe due to its vigorous growth and delightful flavor profile. The tree, reaching up to 20 ft at maturity, boasts a moderately resistant nature to diseases, making it a gardener's favorite.

This medium-to-large apple has a distinct round to flattened shape with vibrant greenish-yellow skin that is artistically brushed with a bright red hue and broken stripes. The fruit is adorned with russetted lenticels and, as it ripens, develops a pale blue bloom. Its creamy-yellow flesh is fine-grained, juicy, and aromatic, offering a brisk and refreshing taste that matures to mellow perfection in storage. Ideal for apple sauce and cider, its slightly acidic flavor pairs wonderfully with various culinary creations. However, take note that it can become mealy if over-ripened or stored too long. As one of the few apples that can be grown from seed, it begins bearing fruit at a young age, ensuring an annual bounty. Harvested late in the season over a three-week span, Borowinka Apple is a classic choice for those who appreciate rich heritage and robust flavor.
