Magnolia macrophylla, also known as the Bigleaf Magnolia, boasts the largest single flower and simple leaf of any native plant in North America. This medium-sized understory tree typically grows to 30-50 ft tall and is easily recognized by its large leaf size of 10-30 inches long and 10-12 inches broad. The weight of this heavy foliage often causes the tree's branches to bend. The bark of the plant has been traditionally used to treat sinus problems and toothaches. Bigleaf Magnolia is native to the southeastern United States and eastern Mexico and is found in rich mesic woods. While it can be challenging to cultivate under artificial conditions, it is possible to grow it to its full potential in loose, undisturbed rich mesic soil in full sun or partial shade with ample moisture. This species is endangered in Arkansas, Ohio, and Florida and is threatened in North Carolina. Get your own Bigleaf Magnolia from our nursery and see for yourself the unique beauty of this Southern treasure.
