Leucothoe fontanesiana, commonly known as Mountain Doghobble, is an enchanting broadleaf evergreen shrub from the Ericaceae (blueberry) family. Native to the southeastern United States, this versatile plant typically reaches heights of 3 to 6 feet and thrives in moist environments like ravines and streambanks, often alongside Rhododendron maximum thickets. Named after a maiden loved by Apollo in Greek mythology, this shrub is a captivating addition to any landscape.

Mountain Doghobble is best grown in moist, acidic, and organically rich soils. While it flourishes in partial shade, it can adapt to full shade or sun if provided with consistent moisture, although it struggles in drought or windy conditions. Hardy to USDA Zone 5, it benefits from being planted in a protected location with sufficient winter mulch, especially in colder climates. Over time, it forms charming colonies through suckering and can be pruned to manage height.

From late April to June, stunning clusters of bell-shaped, creamy white flowers appear, adding a fragrant touch to your garden. Its lanceolate, evergreen leaves provide a lush backdrop year-round and create a striking visual, especially when exposed to fall and winter sun. Ideal for woodland or naturalized areas, Mountain Doghobble is perfect as a hedge, specimen, or accent plant, enhancing pollinator and winter gardens alike. With no serious pest issues and only minor leaf spot concerns in poorly aerated areas, this shrub is a low-maintenance choice for a diverse range of garden styles.
