Introducing the Lactuca sativa 'Salad Bowl' Salad Bowl Lettuce - a great variety of oak leaf lettuce that produces sweet and tender deep lobed green leaves. This annual/biennial plant prefers well-drained soil and neutral/basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade or no shade, but requires moist soil. It is hardy to zone 6 and not frost tender. The lettuce plant has a rosette growth habit initially, but gradually produces stem and branches that lengthen and produce many flower heads that resemble dandelions but smaller. This is referred to as bolting, and lettuce is harvested before it bolts. This variety is slow to bolt, making it suitable to grow later in the spring than many other varieties. It is also harvested in about 60 days from sowing and does well in cool weather in the spring and early summer. Visit http://plants.usda.gov for more information.
