Looking for a stunning, native North American Iris? Look no further than Iris versicolor, also called Harlequin Blueflag, Larger Blueflag, Northern Blueflag, and other variations. This flowering herbaceous perennial plant can grow 2-3 ft high and tends to form large clumps from thick, creeping rhizomes. During May to July, well-developed blue flowers bloom that have 6 petals and sepals spread out nearly flat and have two different forms. The flowers are typically light to deep blue, with purple and violet also being common. Besides its beauty, Iris versicolor holds cultural significance. Some Native American tribes used the roots as a protection against rattlesnakes. The plant is also used to obtain a blue infusion to test for acids and alkalis. The leaves of the plant can be used to weave baskets and mats. Order seeds now to add this stunning plant to your garden!
