Introducing the Gliricidia sepium Madre, also known as Nicaraguan Coffee-shade and Quickstick, a medium-sized tree that can grow up to 12 meters high. With smooth bark ranging from grayish-white to deep red-brown, its composite leaves can be up to 30 cm long, composed of leaflets 2-7 cm long and 1-3 cm wide. The flowers are found at the end of branches, bright pink to lilac colored and tinged with white, with a pale yellow spot at the base. The tree's fruit is a pod that produces 4-10 round brown seeds and grows well in acidic soils, particularly volcanic soils in Central America and Mexico. The Gliricidia sepium is multi-purpose, used for live fencing, fodder, firewood, and green manure. Its high protein content makes it an ideal cut and carry forage for cattle, sheep, and goats. It also works well in intercropping situations and helps stabilize soil. In many areas, the tree is used for medicinal and insect repellent purposes. Though there are limitations to its use, the Gliricidia sepium Madre offers a plethora of benefits to those who plant it.
