Fraxinus chinensis, also known as Chinese Ash, is a species of flowering tree that is highly valued for its wood, which is commonly used in cabinet making. The bark of the Chinese Ash tree possesses various medicinal properties, making it a significant ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been historically used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, and stomachic.

The Chinese Ash tree grows to a height of 3-20 meters and has glabrous branchlets. The buds are brown tomentose, pubescent, or glandular hairy, while the leaves are 12-35 cm long with a petiole of 3-9 cm. The leaflet blades are broadly ovate, ovate, lanceolate, or elliptic to obovate-lanceolate in shape, measuring 4-16 × 2-7 cm. The primary veins can range from 5-10 on each side of the midrib. The tree produces panicles that are terminal or lateral, ranging from 5-10 cm in length.

Chinese Ash trees are dioecious, meaning they have separate male and female flowers. The staminate flowers are congested, while the pistillate flowers are more lax. The samara, a fruit produced by the tree, is spatulate to very narrowly-shaped and measures 2.5-4 cm × 3-7(-15) mm. The Chinese Ash tree thrives in slopes, along rivers, roadsides, and mixed woods at elevations ranging from 800-2300 meters. It can be found throughout China, as well as in Japan, Korea, Russia, and Vietnam.

In terms of medicinal uses, the bark of Fraxinus chinensis has been found to possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antitussive, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, and stomachic properties. It is beneficial in treating bacterial infections, coughs, apoplexy, liver diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, eye diseases such as cataracts, and respiratory conditions like cough and asthma. The bark contains aesculin, which exhibits anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, and analgesic actions. It also contains fraxetin, a component that has an inhibitory effect on the central nervous system and demonstrates stronger and safer analgesic properties compared to aspirin. Additionally, fraxetin exhibits antibacterial activity.

Other than its medicinal uses, the Chinese Ash tree has other practical applications. The plant extract is said to be used as a protective barrier for the skin against ultraviolet light. The wood of the tree is highly sought after and utilized in cabinet making.

Fraxinus chinensis is a hardy tree that can withstand zone 6 climates and requires moist soil for optimal growth. It can tolerate strong winds but not maritime exposure. Furthermore, the tree exhibits tolerance to atmospheric pollution.
