Euonymus latifolius, also known as Broadleaf Euonymus or Large-leaved Spindle, is a deciduous shrub grows up to 9 ft by 9 ft and produces bright red fruit capsules with orange seeds. It's native to southern Europe and western Asia and is a very attractive addition to gardens. The plant is in flower in May and its seeds ripen in September, making for a stunning autumn display. Not only does it look great, but the root contains about 4% Gutta Percha, which is a non-elastic rubber that's used for making plastics and insulating electric cables. While some plants in this genus are suspected of being poisonous, no records of toxicity have been seen for Euonymus latifolius. It prefers light to heavy soils and can grow in semi-shade or no shade, making it versatile and easy to care for. If you're looking for a low maintenance shrub with year-round interest, Broadleaf Euonymus is a great choice.
