Dicentra spectabilis, also known as Bleeding Heart, is a beloved and popular plant for good reason. With compound leaves and leaflets in threes, it grows on fleshy green to pink stems up to 3 feet tall. The heart-shaped flowers are 1-2 inches long, with pink outer petals and white inner petals, hanging elegantly in a horizontal raceme. Blooming from late spring to early summer, seeds with whitish elaiosomes are borne in long pods. While the plant often goes dormant in summer after blooming, it is well worth the wait for its stunning display. Each arching spike is lined with an elegant row of pink and white "hearts". This much-loved plant is a standout addition to any garden or landscape.
