Cinnamomum camphora, also known as Camphor tree, Camphorwood, or Camphor Laurel, is an exquisite evergreen tree that can grow up to 100 ft tall. Its shiny, waxy leaves release the fragrance of camphor when crushed, with a long history of herbal use in the Orient. While it is mainly used in aromatherapy and as an essential oil nowadays, Camphor has been used internally in the treatment of hysteria in the past. Camphor is derived from the volatile oil extracted from the tree and has many practical uses, including medicinal purposes. The wood from Cinnamomum camphora is also highly valued for its beautiful grain and is often used in furniture, cabinetry, and finishes. Native to China, Taiwan, and Japan, the tree has been introduced to many other countries worldwide, making it an invasive species in some areas, such as Australia and parts of the United States.
