Carya pallida, also known as the sand hickory, is a species of hickory native to the southeastern United States. This tree can reach impressive heights of up to 80 feet. The sand hickory produces small, sweet seeds that can be eaten raw or cooked. The thin-shelled seeds are up to 3cm long and ripen in late autumn. If stored in their shells in a cool place, the seeds will keep for at least 6 months. Carya pallida prefers well-drained sandy or rocky soils and can be found on bluffs, ridges, rolling hills, and dry woods. Add this stunning tree to your landscape and enjoy its delicious seeds as a bonus!
