Looking for a tough, low-maintenance hedge plant that also adds color to your landscape? Look no further than Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea', also known as Red Japanese Barberry. Native to Japan and Asia, this medium-sized shrub is incredibly tolerant of trimming and has prickly branches that make it a great barrier to larger creatures. In addition to its effective defense system, this plant boasts bright green foliage that turns orange, scarlet, and reddish purple in the fall, and yellow flowers followed by bright red fruit that provide an attractive pop of color in the winter. Not only is it visually appealing, but our seed produces a very high percentage of red seedlings. This versatile plant would make a great addition to any garden as a deciduous hedge.
