Introducing the stunning Asclepias physocarpa - Balloonplant, also known as balloon cotton-bush, bishop's balls, nailhead, or swan plant. This striking milkweed species is native to southeast Africa, but has been widely naturalized and is often used as an ornamental plant. Its name comes from the swollen bladder-like follicles which are full of seeds, adding unique interest to any garden area. This herbaceous perennial can grow to over six feet tall and blooms in warm months. It prefers moderate moisture, sandy and well-drained soil, and full sun. As a food source for caterpillars of the monarch butterfly and other Danaus butterflies, this plant is an excellent addition to any butterfly garden. Plus, stems with seed pods make excellent dried flower arrangements. Winter hardy to USDA zones 8-10, Asclepias physocarpa is a low maintenance plant that tolerates deer and drought conditions. Order yours today and enjoy its showy fruit all season long!
