Arctium minus, commonly known as Lesser Burdock or Common Burdock, is a biennial thistle native to Europe, but now found in most of the United States as a common weed. Known for its extremely large leaves and hooked bracts, this plant grows up to 1.5 meters tall and produces purple flowers from July to October. Lesser Burdock produces seed heads that attach to animals and humans for seed dispersal, each containing approximately 40 seeds. While this herb may seem like a nuisance weed, it is also one of the foremost detoxifying herbs in both Chinese and Western herbal medicine and has been used for centuries. The dried root of the one-year-old plant is the official herb, and the leaves and fruits can also be used.
