Native to China, this deciduous shrub or small tree grows up to 7m tall and blooms with pink or white flowers in late summer. The young shoots are edible and can be cooked or used in salads. The stem and root have medicinal properties and are used as a warming painkilling herb in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and dysmenorrhoea. However, caution is advised with the bark, which is slightly poisonous. This plant prefers a good deep loam and a semi-shady position, making it suitable for borders, containers, massing, rock gardens, and woodland gardens.
