Looking for a beautiful and unique addition to your garden? Look no further than Aesculus californica, or California buckeye. This large deciduous shrub or small tree grows up to 40 ft tall and is endemic to California and southwestern Oregon. Its silver bark and dark green leaves make for a striking appearance, while its fragrant white to light pink flowers add a lovely touch. The tree's fig-shaped capsules contain an orange-brown seed, which is the largest of any temperate plant species, though it is also poisonous. California buckeye has adapted well to California's Mediterranean climate, growing in a wide range of conditions from canyon bottoms to dry slopes and hilltops. Although toxic to humans and livestock, the tree has been used by Native American tribes to stupefy fish for easier catching. It also makes a good fireboard and is used as an ornamental plant. Plus, its roots work as a soil binder, preventing erosion in hilly regions. Add a touch of California beauty to your garden with the stunning California buckeye.
